“In the Flesh” confronts and embraces the human body as a powerful subject matter.
The nudes portrayed in “In the Flesh” transcend mere physicality. Stray’s exploration of gender, identity, and the human experience is subtly interwoven within each brushstroke. While gender is not the explicit focus, it emerges as an implicit element, inviting contemplation and challenging preconceived notions of the nude in art.”
Passionate and gestural, Stray’s artistic approach captivates the viewer. When considering this new nude Stray – series one can draw comparisons to the great nude paintings of the past. Poussin and Rubens were both known for their depictions of the human form using classical techniques to create intricate and nuanced portrayals of the human figure.
Similarly Bacon and De Kooning both explored the human form in their work, using bold strokes and vivid colours to convey the intensity of the human experience. What set Stray apart from these artists is her ability to weave subtle elements of gender and identity into her work. While not the explicit focus, these themes emerge as implicit elements, challenging the viewer’s preconceived notions of the nude in art.
