Vision and views: an exhibiton of paintings by Torild Stray

Torild Stray shines her gaze on New York City and the human figure with the same reflective serenity. The work produced has a unique dreamy quality, yet asserts its voice strongly.

Visions and Views brings together two sets of oil paintings by artist Torild Stray.  A series of New York skyline show the drama of the city in its power and its vulnerability, think 9/11. The other set gathers what Stray terms “diary pieces”. These 8”x8” paintings on linen reinterpret Stray’s reality by simplifying the form nearly to abstraction. Delicate colors interplay, adding a spiritual dimension to the strong compositions. Stray is a painter dealing with subtle, yet deeply human subject matters in her work. Through years of drawing and painting from the human figure, she has developed tools  to explore her vision, and transform it into paint, color and light. She is constantly striving to uncover new meanings and other dimensions by working with space, scale, depth, surface, color/shape transitions, and positive and negative forms. She states : “Similar to a dream, painting for me is an active dialog between the unconscious and the conscious where new forms start to emerge with a life of their own, charged with content. With this language, the image can transcend the individual human experience, and express the rawest aspects of the human condition with powerful meaning.”

To connect the compelling work of artist Torild Stray with Brooklyn communities, an exhibit will be held in Gallery Particulier’s townhouse in Prospect Leffert Gardens from September 28 until October 12. About: Gallery Particulier is a Brooklyn based gallery connecting artists with lay people by making exhibitions less intimidating, and by bringing art into the community. It was founded in 2021 by Arabella von Arx, an art critic and editor with a background in film and media.
