About STORIES
Torild Stray says: “Showing paintings at Lysverket is like “a home away from home”. It is an intimate space rather then the traditional gallery concept. Imagine you came to my house for dinner and I told you these stories. I have selected a range of my work, spanning over several years in New York and in Bergen today. Some of which have been exhibited in NY, Oslo and Oseana Art Center.
The starting point for a work of art may as well be something rather banal, as a man on a paddel board striving with finding his balance. However it is the underlying forces of existence such as our dreams, myths, everyday anxieties, and existential puzzles and their stories that informs my work. I process this through the complexity of drawing and the power of color. The dark strength of the charcoal and the mystery and drama of the occurring silhouettes.
Stories at Lysverketexpress my personal experiences that has roots in contemporary society. From the forest at my sacred Summer place Gvila, where I work out of a small traditional “ stabbur”, to the large painting of a paddler during Hurricane Harvey floods in Texas 2018 and back to Ground Zero and my Artist Residency on top of the WTC 1998.
Included here are signed prints “ New York Metamorphosis Blue Veins ” 2019 based on the large original (5 x 2 meters) now permanently in the collection of and on view at The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York .https://www.911memorial.org/connect/blog/new-view-torild-strays-new-york-metamorphosis My most resent painting in this show is a pink oil painting, an image of war, based on a woman who survived the oppression of ISIS. On the far wall is a post 9/11 cityscape. During the rebuilding of The New World Trade Center (“Freedom Tower”) I painted it from a view on 60th fl. in the opposite Barclay Tower.
Included in the show are also three glazed clay sculptures spread out in the restaurant space.A drawing from my WTC studio, looking toward Long Island City is mounted in the entrance area.In the private dining room is one of my larger charcoals based on an oil supply ship, a frequent site in the Bergen Harbour. I welcome you into my world of images.”
